KAY BRYAN, 85

Kay Bryan, 85 of Montezuma, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, at the New Sharon Friends Church. Interment was in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Sharon Friends Church or the Diabetes Foundation. Violet Kathleen Bryan, daughter of John and Velma (Sarver) Newport was born on March 13, 1923, in Lacey. She was a 1941 graduate of Searsboro High School. On June 16, 1941, Kay was united in marriage to Edwin Bryan at the Friends Church Parsonage in Searsboro. To this union, seven children were born, Terry, Ron, Carol, Rick, Joy, Denny and Kelly. Together they farmed in the Montezuma area until 1974. In the fall of 1970 Edwin and Kay opened Fun Valley Ski Area in Montezuma. Kay was very active in Fun Valley's success. She was vice president and treasurer at Fun Valley. She was in charge of the kitchen, and writing out checks. Kay was known for making pies and cookies that everyone around here enjoyed. She played the piano/organ at the Friends Church for over 60 years. Kay enjoyed crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards and dominos. She enjoyed making quilts; especially for everyone in her family. Kay prayed daily and was an avid reader. She belonged to the New Sharon Friends Church, Forest Home Club and Montezuma Country Club.

Kay's memory will be cherished by her seven children, Terry (Linda) Bryan of Montezuma, Ron (Joyce) Bryan of Oskaloosa, Carol (Jim) Means of Olathe, Kan., Rick (Connie) Bryan of Oskaloosa, Joy (Dean) Hubbard of Montezuma, Denny (Marcy) Bryan of Oskaloosa, and Kelly (Lori) Bryan of Montezuma; 50 grandchildren including their spouses; 56 great-grandchildren including their spouses; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Donna Bryan; and two sisters-in-law, Lorna Bryan and Delores (Bob) Burt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Velma Newport; her husband, Edwin Bryan; her sister, Gayle Cooper; her half brother, Onis Bunting; two half sisters, Lois Hasley and Geraldine Hite; and her granddaughter, Amber Bryan.
