Newspaper Obituary dated Nov. 4, 1930

DEATH CALLS W.F. HAFKEY

Respected Resident of Chester Passes Away Sunday at Age of 62 Years.

FUNERAL SERVICES ARE HELD AT CHESTER MONDAY

Mr. Hafkey, Throughout All His Life, Was Distinguished by Integrity and Diligence.

William F. Hafkey, eldest son of William C. and Helen E. Hafkey, was born at LeClaire, Ia., Dec. 29, 1867 and departed this life at a hospital in Grinnell, Nov. 2, 1930.

With his parents he came to Poweshiek county in 1875, which continued to be his home with the exception of three years spent in the west until seven years ago when he moved to Marshall county near Gilman.

March 20, 1907 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Pilgrim. To this union was born one son Carl William of Marshalltown, Ia.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and son, four brothers, Charlie of Atwood, Kansas, Frank at home, George of Brooklyn and Lewis of Grinnell, three sisters, Mrs. Spangler of Oakley, Kansas, Eva and Minnie of Grinnell, four nieces and two nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. H.L. Wissler, were held from the Congregational church at Chester Monday afternoon. Burial was in the Chester cemetery. Pall bearers were Ira Green, Thomas Tone, Earl Green, Gilmore Peterson, G. Talbott and A.H. Dempster.

For fifty-five years the Hafkey family have been closely and honorably identified with the history and development of Chester township. The father and mother were among the best citizens and a family of boys and girls grew to do honor to their ancestry. The deceased man was recognized for his integrity and diligence. He was an earnest worker in patriotic service during the great war and what he did for the nation was done with a will and freely.

It is to be regretted that death took him away before he had reached the allotted years of man and yet it is pleasant for his friends to remember the earnest and conscientious life he led.

The fifty-five years which the family have lived in Chester will be grateful memeory to the large circle of friends Mr. Hafkey had won. The services the father gave during the Civil war and the service the son gave as a civilian in the World war were patriotic, honorable and efficient and when the last kind words are said over William F. Hafkey the kindest will be that he loved his family and his country and served them both to the best of his ability.
