MARGARET M. GILDERSLEEVE

Margaret M. Gildersleeve, 99, of Grinnell died Thursday, Jan. 8, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Ken Wallace and John Epperson officiating. Organist was Lorna Lang, and vocalists were Rich and Karolyn Milliken.

Pallbearers were Wayne and Robert Birkenholz; Randy, Tom and Rhonda Gildersleeve; Dan, Dean and Don Smith; Judy Damman; Janice Gustoff; Teresa Mead and Denise Kaisand. Honorary bearers were Gloria and Pamela Birkenholz, Sandy and Theresa Gildersleeve, Kathy and Patti Smith, Dennis Damman, Rick Gustoff, Spence Mead and Dave Kaisand.

Burial was in Our Silent City Cemetery, Kellogg.

The daughter of Jacob and Emma Lightfoot Mulbrook, she was born April 25, 1899, in Kellogg. She attended school in the Kellogg and Newton school districts and was a 1919 graduate of Newton High School. She later taught school in the area for several years.

She was married to Ola Hill Gildersleeve Aug. 18, 1922, in Newton. They farmed in Jasper and Poweshiek counties for many years, then moved to Grinnell in 1962.

Mrs. Gildersleeve had been a resident of the Mayflower since 1983. She was a member of the Chester-Newburg Congregational Church, a 72-year member of the Sonora Grange and, at the Mayflower, the Gay-Nineties Club.

Surviving are three children, Bayonne Birkenholz of Newton, Delmar of Fennimore, Wis., and Phyllis Smith of Grinnell; one sister, Odetha Hackney of Gifford; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Doris Gildersleeve; one granddaughter; five brothers; and five sisters.

Memorial contributions may be directed to her church, the Mayflower or Our Silent City Cemetery Association.
