A native of Blessing, Iowa, he was graduated from State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls with the class of 1910. He came to Grinnell in 1915 and from that time until 1921 served as a physics and debate instructor at Grinnell high school.

While serving as Grinnell principal, Mr. Cranny was instrumental in helping to organize the Central Iowa Conference.

At the dedication in 1961 of the new Grinnell high school athletic field, it was named T.T. Cranny field in his honor. Mr. Cranny was present for the dedication ceremonies.
