BERNICE N. VEVERKA OATES, 92

Bernice N. Mohr VeVerka Oates, 92, of Montezuma, passed away at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002.

Her funeral service was Thursday, Dec. 19, at Watts Funeral Home with the Rev. George M. Salnave officiating. Interment was at Masonic-IOOF Cemetery, Montezuma.

Honorary casket bearers were Roger Mullen, Jerry Minner, Newell Wolf and Glenn Jontz.

Bernice was born Oct. 30, 1910, on a farm near Victor, the daughter of Cleve and Blanche (McAdams) Mohr. She attended school in Guernsey. She married Loren VeVerka at the Methodist parsonage in Deep River. To this union, a daughter, Margaret Naomi, was born. She died at the age of three months. After they married, she and her husband lived in Montezuma and later moved to Des Moines. After the death of her husband, she married Arlen Oates. She worked for several years for Younkers Department Store in Des Moines. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

Those left to honor her memory are her sisters Frances J. Mullen, Maxine B. McLain, and Evelyn M. Bates, all of Montezuma; Grace P. Keller of Ocala, Fla.; and Hazel L. Starkey of Portland, Oregon; brother-in-laws Ronald Bates and Forrest McLain, both of Montezuma, and Clark Wiedow of Baxter; many nieces and nephews and many friends.
