HENRY MARTIN RICKARD

Henry Martin Rickard, son of Martin and Anna Turner Rickard, was born January 24, 1877, in Chester township and passed away September 17, 1951, at the Community hospital in Grinnell, Iowa, aged 74 years, 7 months and 24 days. With the exception of a few years spent in Missouri and Illinois, he was a lifelong resident of Grinnell. He was united in marriage with Anna Josephine Strader in Parnell, Mo., on September 8, 1907. To this union were born six children, five of whom survive. They are Maurine (Mrs. L.A. Diamond of Alice, Texas); Mrs. Alma Turner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ralph Rickard of Grinnell; Eldora (Mrs. Hilliard Turner of Grinnell); and Glenn Rickard of Bellflower, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 1, 1944, after 37 years of devoted companionship and a daughter Rose who passed away Nov. 13, 1932 at the age of 15 years. Additional survivors include 11 grandchildren; a sister, Miss Fanny Rickard of Grinnell; a brother Alvin Rickard of Rapid City, S. Dak.; a niece, Mrs. Willard Wells of Grinnell; numerous other relatives and many friends.

He attended the rural schools and the Congregational church at Chester and later attended Iowa State college for one year. Due to the death of his father, he was unable to continue his college education and returned to the farm in Chester. He was a member of the Grinnell Prohibition Alliance during its active days. Since young manhood he has been handicapped by poor hearing and always deeply regretted that due to that fact, he was unable to enter active service in the defense of his country, but was proud to have served for 11-1/2 years in Company K of the Iowa National Guard.

Henry Rickard's family was close to his heart and a host of friends testify to his thoughtfulness and love of his fellow-man. He rejoiced with their good fortune and shared their burdens any way he could in time of trouble. He was a firm believer in the love of God for man and the need of man for God. He will be sadly missed by his children, grandchildren and other relatives and friends whose lives were made just a little happier by his many acts of kindness.
