WILLIAM C. HAFKEY

William C. Hafkey passed away at 4:30 o'clock on Monday afternoon at his home on North Elm street, following a long period of suffering from Bright's disease. He was aged 68 years, 6 months and 8 days. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning, from the residence, conducted by Rev. W.S. Kight, of Valley Junction, an old friend. Interment was at Chester Center. Three Odd Fellows, F.P. Marvin, P.A. Terrill and C.K. Rich, and three old soldiers, John Campbell, H.M. Bray and Archie Armstrong, of Chester, were the pallbearers.

Mr. Hafkey was a pioneer in Chester township and few men in the long years of his residence there were held in higher esteem. Of German birth, coming to this country at the age of nine years in 1851, his parents settled in Scott County. At the age of twenty he enlisted in Company K, 20th Iowa Volunteers, serving till mustered out in July, 1865. His war record was a long and honorable one and no one whom we have known took more pride in his service for his country than Mr. Hafkey.

There survive him, his wife and eight children to mourn the loss of a man whose life has ever been one of thrift, integrity and honor. Few men were more gifted than he in the art of making friends and none retained friendships with greater loyalty and tenacity. Every one who knew Mr. Hafkey loved him, and the memory of his cordial, cheerful love-inspiring life will remain among Grinnell and Chester people for long years to come.
