HARRY HOPKINS, FDR AIDE, ASHES TO BE BURIED HERE

The family of the late Harry Hopkins, aide to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, has arranged for the burial of his ashes in Hazelwood cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa, where Hopkins was raised and went to college.

The former Lend-Lease administrator and secretary of commerce died Jan. 29, 1946, and was cremated the following day. Though born in Sioux City, Iowa, he lived for many years in Grinnell and attended Grinnell College, from which he was graduated in 1912.

SERVICE SET

A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hazelwood Cemetery. Participating will be the Rev. John C. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, and Dr. Glenn Leggett, president of Grinnell College who will give a brief address.

Family members attending the ceremony will be Hopkins' son, Robert; his daughter, Mrs. Allin Baxter and her two children, Audrey and David; and a granddaughter, Mrs. James Griffen and her two children, Allison and David. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell.

Harry Hopkins began his career as a social worker in New York and in 1931 became head of the relief organization set up in that state by the then Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt.

WASHINGTON DUTIES

In 1933 when Roosevelt took office as President, Hopkins came to Washington to work on relief problems for the Federal government. He headed the Federal Emergency Relief Agency, Civil Works Administration, and the Works Progress Administration.

As friend and adviser, Hopkins served President Roosevelt directly in many missions on both the national and international levels and was considered one of the most influential public figures of his time.
