PAUL W. SCHALINSKE, 84
Paul W. Schalinske, 84, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Thursday, January 22, 1998 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.
A funeral was Monday, January 26, 1998 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. The Rev. Stephen Jasch officiated and Kristina Schalinske gave the message.
Margaret Amo was the organist and Roger Henderson sang "How Great Thou Art." The Congregational Hymn was "I Know That My Redeemer Lives."
Honorary casket bearers were LaVaughn Cram, Richard Seeland, Gerald Youngbeck, Victor Bailey, Harris Stafford and Warren Ryan.
Casket bearers were Robert E. Anderson, Tilford Christenson, Gordon Van Donselaar, Ted Urfer, Gordon Canfield and Gary Wilson.
Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Following the graveside services, relatives and friends joined the family at the church for lunch and fellowship.
Paul was born August 21, 1913 in Albert City, Iowa, the son of the Rev. Emil and Meta Schalinske. He was educated in the Albert City and Britt schools and graduated from the Hebron Academy Junior College in Nebraska.
He then graduated from the mortuary science college in St. Louis, Mo. Paul was a 50-year member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association.
He was also a veteran of World War II, where he served in the South Pacific.
On June 24, 1946, he was united in marriage to Jeannette Petersen in Blue Island, Ill. by his father, Rev. Schalinske.
Paul owned and operated the James-Schalinske Funeral Home in Grinnell from 1952 until a heart attack forced his retirement in 1975.
He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving on the building committee for the new church, the church council and the memorial committee. He was chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee when they built the Veterans Memorial building. He was also a past president of the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce and past member of the city planning and zoning commission.
Paul loved beautiful wood and took great pleasure in creating gifts for his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Jeannette; two sons, Jerrold Schalinske of Burnsville, Minn. and John Schalinske of West Des Moines; two daughters, Phyllis Finney of Roseburg, Ore. and Judith Bone of Tony, Wis., six grandchildren and a sister, Meta Demarce of Lake Forest, Ill.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Iowa Heart Association.
