RITES MONDAY FOR GODFREY VEIT, 85

A heart attack last Friday claimed the life of Godfrey E. Veit, 85, at Mercy hospital in Iowa City where he had been admitted two days previously. Mr. Veit had farmed near Brooklyn for 56 years.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the Hartwick Congregational Church with the Rev. Robert Cutbirth officiating. Organist was Mrs. Everett Korns and soloist was Mrs. Calvin Korns.

Interment was in Rector cemetery at Chelsea. Pallbearers were Charles Veit, August Hensler, Clarence Possehl, August Bazyn, Nelson Korns and Howard Gritsch. Flower attendants were Mrs. Carrie Starry, Mrs. Nelson Korns and Mrs. August Hensler.

Godfrey Ernest Veit, son of Gottfried and Rosene Wencilburger Veit, was born August 10, 1879 on a farm south of Chelsea in Tama County. He was the fifth member in a family of 12 children. He was baptised at his home by Pastor Phillip Studt of St. Paul's Lutheran church of Luzerne. He attended the Rector rural school and the Rector Methodist church.

October 6, 1909, he was married to Jennie Ryan of Chelsea and the following February the couple moved to a farm near Brooklyn where they had always lived. Two daughters were born to the couple, Mrs. Harold (Gayle) Goodman of Millersburg and Mrs. Milton (Bernice) Cronbaugh of Hartwick. The couple had observed their golden wedding anniversary in October, 1959.

Mr. Veit transferred his membership from the Rector Methodist church to the Hartwick Congregational church after moving to the farm. For many years he had served on the board of trustees of the church and was active in church affairs as long as his health permitted. He had been active in community and civic affairs for many years. Because of ill health he retired in 1963 as vice president of the Poweshiek County Mutual Insurance Association, a position he had held for a number of years. Until his death, he had served as director of the Hartwick State Bank and for several years had been a member of the Hartwick board of education, part of the time as president.

Mr. Veit had enjoyed good health until the last few years. His niece, Mrs. Alma Waidelish, had assisted in his home and in his care for the past four years.

He is survived by his two daughters; nine grandchildren, Gene, Donald, and Mary Ellen Goodman, and Bonnie, Cherie, Nicholas, Crystal, Victoria and Leeann Cronbaugh, and one sister, Mrs. George Louzenhouser of Wheatridge, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie, Jan. 15, 1961; his parents; five brothers, Jacob, William, John, George and Joseph, and five sisters, Fredricka (Mrs. Adam Euchner), Mary, Rose (Mrs. Henry Whitsell), Katherine and Pauline.
