KENNETH R. HALSTEAD

Kenneth R. Halstead, 86, of Grinnell died Sunday, Oct. 9, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Memorial services for Kenneth Halstead were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen McCune. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Born April 20, 1919, on a farm in rural Poweshiek County, he was the son of Leonard A. and Anna T. Larsen Halstead. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1938.

He served along with the Ninth Army in the European Theater during World War II.

On Oct. 11, 1947, he married Marjorie Ryan in Grinnell, where the couple continued to make their home. For many years he drove a livestock truck and was employed with his father and brother. Later, he purchased the business on his own.

In 1964, he began his career as a driver for the Grinnell Fire Department, a post from which he retired in 1982.

He had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 1995.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Kirk of Grinnell and Rick of Carl Junction, Mo.; a sister, Helen Heether of Angola, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Len, Eddie and Keith Halstead; and two sisters, Bernice Hotchkin and Harriet Eisele.
