EMMETT R. SMALL SUCCUMBS JULY 9 TO LONG ILLNESS

Emmett R. Small, 67, longtime Grinnell resident and businessman here for over 40 years, died Thursday afternoon at a local hospital following an illness of the last five months.

Memorial services were held Saturday afternoon from the Grinnell Methodist church with the Rev. Chester E. Custer, pastor, officiating. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Organ music for the services was provided by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner. Honorary pallbearers were John Peters, Warren Beaty, Charles Hink, Bill Cunningham, John Queen, Ed Lefler, Bob Brown, Ed Speth, and Wes Ahrens.

Those desiring may make contributions to the Methodist church building fund.

Born July 17, 1896, at Indianapolis, Ind., he was the son of Clarence and Rosa Small. At an early age, he moved with his mother to Fox Lake, Ill., where he received his education. He later moved to Brooklyn, Iowa, where he was employed as a harness maker.

On April 21, 1917, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving with Co. E, 109th Ammunition Train, as a saddler in France. He came to Grinnell following his discharge.

He had been engaged in business here the past 40 years and for the last 28 years had operated Small's Jewelry Store at its present location on Broad Street.

On Nov. 12, 1933, he was united in marriage with Beatrice McDowell at St. Louis, Mo.

A member of the Methodist church, he served the church as a Steward and member of the Board of Deacons. He was also a member of the Methodist Men's Club, B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1266, Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion, and Stanley-Marchellino Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his widow, Beatrice; a daughter, Mrs. Haskell (Elaine) Johnson of Annandale, Va.; and three grandchildren, Sherry Bea, Ronald and Claudia Johnson.
