HAROLD J. BEHOUNEK

Harold J. Behounek, Chelsea, died March 15, 2001, at the Grinnell Hospital, due to an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2001, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chelsea. Deacon J.C. Otto officiated. Lector was Beaty Dvorak; organist was Jane Hrabak; and cantor was Anna Upah. Casket bearers were Arlo Cibula, Gary Whitsell, Jacob Behounek, Steve Behounek, Andrew Behounek and Joseph Behounek. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Prusha, Leo Behounek, Earl Johnston, Dennis Wauters, Chris Behounek and Wesley Whitsell. Military rites were held by the Benda-Sell American Legion Post #269 in Chelsea at the burial in Rector Cemetery, rural Chelsea.

The son of Joseph Behounek, Jr. and Sophia S. Rataj, Harold was born March 27, 1918 on the family farm near Chelsea, Ia. Harold was raised in the Chelsea area was a graduate of Chelsea High School, and studied Animal Husbandry at Iowa State University. He served in World War II and received bronze stars for the New Guinea and Papuan Campaigns.

Harold was married to Viola E. Patten on August 30, 1947. The couple made their home on the farm Harold was born and raised on. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Iowa Farm Bureau, and a 50 year member of Benda-Sell American Legion Post #269.

Survivors include Harold's wife, Viola E. Patten of Chelsea; three sons, Gregory and Pam Behounek of Blairstown, Kenneth and Deb Behounek of Tama, and Nathan and Valerie Behounek of Chelsea; and grandchildren, Melissa (Behounek) Marshall, Chris and Andrew Behounek, and Carie, Jacob and Sarah Behounek.

Hrabak's Funeral Home in Chelsea was in charge of arrangements.
