USEFUL LIFE OF JOHN FRANKLIN RIVERS IS OVER

John Franklin Rivers, son of William and Martha Allen Rivers, was born near Searsboro, Iowa, January 1, 1864, and died July 3, 1935, being 71 years, 6 months and 3 days old. Funeral services were held from the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Robert Inglis. Interment in Hazelwood cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. E.B.T. Spencer, accompanied by Professor Elias Blum at the piano. Pallbearers were Rex Rivers, Vern Bolen, Francis Ford, Emery Farley, Lewis Ford and Iver Davis.

Mr. Rivers came of one of the oldest pioneer families of Poweshiek county, his father coming to Poweshiek county in 1846. At that time Iowa was yet to be subdued and it took men of courage and stamina to cope with these hardships. Mr. Rivers inherited these traits of his pioneer ancestors and was always ready to extend a helping hand to those not so fortunate.

John, as we all knew him, was an industrious, hard working man, honest in his dealings with his neighbors, saving of his income, always having in mind the future welfare of his family, in which his thoughts were always centered.

On December 4, 1889, he was united in marriage with Miranda Hamor. To this union were born three children, Ethel Rivers, Walter Rivers, and Genevieve Rivers, all at home. These, with his faithful wife and a host of other relatives and friends, are left to mourn his passing.

The following out-of-town relatives and friends were here for the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rivers and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Rivers of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Schuyler Morse and daughter of Kellogg; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Randall, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Randall, Mr. William Randall, Mr. and Mrs. George Shorten, and Mr. and Mrs. Graves of Prairie City; Mrs. Martha Rivers, Miss Wanda Rivers, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Rivers, and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Howell of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. David Rivers and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Rivers of Montezuma; Mrs. John Johnson, Mrs. Fred Lacaeyse, Miss Margaret Lacaeyse, and Miss Mary Lacaeyse of Brooklyn.
