OBITUARY

IRA APPLEGATE

Ira Applegate was born near Eminence, Morgan County, Indiana, March 12th, 1839 and departed this life at the soldiers home at Leavenworth, Kansas, March 11th, 1924, at the age of eighty five years.

In 1853 with his parents he came to Poweshiek county, Iowa, settling in Sugar Creek township. Here on September 23rd, 1860 he was united in marriage to Matilda White, Rev. Martin Gregson officiating.

Ten children were born to this home. Seven of whom came to mature years, three dying in infancy. Two sons, Charles and Albert, died in 1895 and the wife in May 1907. In September 1862 he enlisted in Company C 28th Iowa Voluntary Infantry under Captain J.W. Carr, and was in the battles of Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Seige of Vicksburg, Pleasant Hill, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek.

In 1873 he came to Norton county, Kansas with his family, being one of the very early settlers in the Sappa Valley taking his homestead near Devizes on Monday May 14th of that year. After several years he went back to Iowa and in 1886 returned to Western Kansas locating near St. Francis, Cheyenne County. In 1879 he came back to the Devizes neighborhood where he resided until his death.

He became a christian early in life and was always interested in religious and community affairs.

He leaves four sons, T.E., Homer and George L. of Norcatur, Kansas, Clarence of Norton, Kansas and a daughter Mrs. Mattie Huff of Norcatur. Two brothers Peter N. of Berryville, Arkansas, and W.J. Applegate of Long Beach, California.

There are also 32 grand children and 12 great grand children, with neighbors and friends to treasure his memory.

Funeral services were held at the Hillman school house on Thursday, March 13th conducted by Rev. C.E. Huff and burial was in the Devizes cemetery on a hillside, overlooking the slope over which he drove into the quiet valley so long ago. His was a long life and a helpful one.
