CURTIS POWELL BROWNELL

Curtis Powell Brownell was born July 31, 1865, and departed this life August 19, 1915. He was born at Barry, Ill., and came with his parents to Chester, Iowa, at the age of two years, where he grew to manhood.

Since the age of twenty-one he has farmed in the vicinity of Grinnell. For the last ten years he has been in business in Grinnell.

Sixteen years ago the twenty-third of this month he was married to Ella A. Brown, daughter of John and Mary Brown, of Westfield. To them have been born two children, Mary Hazel, thirteen years of age, and Ruth Harriet, ten years of age. He leaves besides a father, B.F. Brownell, and two sisters, Miss Clara Brownell and Mrs. C.O. Lord.

He was converted at the Sonora M.E. church at the age of fifteen. His membership was transferred to the Grinnell M.E. church, of which he remained a member until his death.

The funeral was held from the house at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Brown; singing by Mrs. Everet Black and Mrs. Roscoe Dempster. The Woodmen marched in a body to the grave. The pall bearers were cousins of Mr. Brownell: Messrs George Pearce, Fred Brown, Edwin Brown, Frank Pearce, Seth Pearce, and John Nichols.

Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. Seth Brown, Miss Dorothy Brown, and Mr. George Brown, all of Manchester. Numerous friends came from Sheridan, Sonora, Chester, Bethel, and Westfield, to pay a last tribute to one who was always loyal in his friendships.

Mr. Brownell was a man of quiet, unassuming ways, and only those who knew him intimately appreciated to the full his kind, unselfish life.
