William Garrett was born in Ireland near Belfast, March 7, 1843, a son of William and Mary McKeag Garrett. He received his education in the common and high schools of Ireland. In the spring of 1864 He crossed the ocean and came west to Rock Island, Illinois, securing employment for three summers working by the month through the summer season and teaching school through the winter. In 1867, he came to Poweshiek County and here spent the remainder of his life. In June 29, 1869, he was married to Miss Mary A. Beeler, daughter of George M. and Nancy Carpenter Beeler. To this union four children were born: Austin Clement, Milton H., Emanuel F., and Clarence R. Mr. Garrett died Feburary 25th 1912, being 68 years, 11 months, and 18 days old at the time of his death. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire neighborhood is with the bereaved family. Funeral services were conducted by M. Gregson from the home 5 1/2 miles southwest of the city.
