CATHERINE AKERS

Catherine J. Akers, 56, of Grinnell died of cancer Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Lawson of the Northside Friends Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner and vocalists were Ruth Ann Dayton and Wilma Schmitz.

Pallbearers were Jack Delk, Terry Freeborn, Brian Kelm, Floyd Haines, Jim Haines and Dean Schropp. Honorary bearers were Allan Akers, Donald Akers, Ernie Akers, Larry Akers, Terry Akers, Russell Haines and Randy Rhondes. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Andrew and Pearl Otto Haines, she was born June 16, 1930 near Deep River. The family moved to Grinnell where she attended school.

On March 21, 1949 she married Eugene Dayton. The couple had four children. She was later married to Robert D. Akers in Grinnell and they had one daughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Akers lived in Grinnell where she worked as an operator for General Telephone Co. She had also worked for DeLong Sportswear Co. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lakeside Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; three daughters, Barbara Boots, Sally Mills and Kelly Akers, all of Grinnell; one son, Gary Dayton of Baltimore, Md.; two stepdaughters, Dawn Farmer of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Linda Neels of Montezuma; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three brothers, John Haines of Sigourney, Bill Haines of Grinnell, and Ray Haines of Gilman; and two sisters, Fern Freeborn and Betty Kelm, both of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Randall Dayton; two brothers, Wallace and Ralph Haines; and two sisters, Zella Delk and Hazel Haines.
