RITES HELD FOR SAM MCCONKEY
Sam McConkey, 75,of 1418 Third Ave., died Monday afternoon, April 16, at Grinnell General Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since last Thursday.
The son of James and Elsie Dixon McConkey, he was born Nov. 24, 1897, at Creston, Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools of Creston and the public schools at University Park, Iowa.
He was married to Lucy Essex on Oct. 3, 1922, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. Following their marriage they farmed for 15 years near New Sharon. In 1937, they moved to Grinnell and he was employed as a security guard by the Maytag company until his retirement in 1963.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Tom McConkey of Madera, Calif.; his daughter-in-law, Hazel; two granddaughters, Saundra, and Victoria, and his cousin, Cleve Lowther of Joliet, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Vigil service was conducted Tuesday evening at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. McConkey were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. L.V. Kuebrich officiated, and (???) was in the Calvary section of Hazelwood Cemetery. Organist was Kathleen Heffner and the vocalist was Ruth (???).
Serving as pallbearers were Robert Henderson, Kenneth Saunders, Richard Parker, Donald Henderson, Jerry Phipps, and Gene Gilbert.
