CHELSEA SERVICES HELD JUNE 3 FOR HARRY HILLIGAS
A longtime Poweshiek county resident, Harry Hilligas, 59, of Chelsea died at a Belle Plaine hospital June 1st of a respiratory ailment contracted when he served in the navy during World War I.
Funeral services were held June 3rd at Chelsea with the Rev. Lowell Holmgren, minister of the Haven Community church officiating. Music was provided by Mr. Helmgren and interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Brooklyn.
Military services were conducted at graveside by members of the Francis Gallagher post of the American Legion from Brooklyn. Pallbearers were Roy Kriegel, James Ryan, Frank Johnston, Richard Ross, Randolph Roudabush and Albert Benda.
Survivors included six brothers, Carl of Grinnell, Fred of California, Tom, Charles, John and Bill, all of Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. Floyd Meyers (Myers) of Newton and Mrs. Ed Kellerman of Welda, Kansas.
Born in Poweshiek county on April 24th, 1897, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hilligas. He attended schools in Poweshiek county and Aliceville, Kans., and enlisted in the navy in May, 1918. While in service he became ill and spent several months in hospitals.
After his discharge he returned to farming when his health permitted. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen lodge.
