MRS. HOCKENBURY SUCCUMBS TUESDAY; FRIDAY SERVICES

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Smith Funeral Home for Mrs. Gertrude Hockenbury, 87, of Grinnell, who died Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Ralph Beebe of the Mayflower Home. Vocal music will be provided by Mrs. Addison Jones, accompanied by Norman Goodbrod at the organ.

Flower bearers will be Miss Rose Rule and Miss Harriett Korns. Pallbearers will be Ray Myers, Avery Adkins, Glenn Anderson, Clair Strand, Harry Ritter, and Lawrence Iverson. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery.

Born in Sheridan Township on April 10, 1875, she was the daughter of Benjamin Vaughn and Nellie Wadsworth Ruff. She moved to Grinnell with her parents where she attended the local schools, graduating with honors from Grinnell high school with the class of 1893. She then attended Grinnell College and became a teacher in Poweshiek county until her marriage to Henry Delmer Hockenbury on August 24, 1898.

To this union were born three children, two of whom survive; Donald R. Hockenbury of Chicago and Kenneth V. Hockenbury of Sioux City. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Meredith of Toledo, Ohio; and Yvonne, Donald and Robert of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Julian Meredith Hockenbury on Nov. 26, 1932; her husband, Henry, at Grinnell on Nov. 24, 1944; and her sister, Mrs. Jeanette Ruff Baynham on Dec. 18, 1947, at Los Angeles, Calif.

Mrs. Hockenbury enjoyed active community and church life in her affiliation with the First Congregational church of Grinnell, except for the years following the time of her marriage when she and her husband resided in Des Moines. There they attended Plymouth Congregational church. They returned to make their permanent home here in June of 1922.

Impaired health commencing in April of 1958 placed limitations on her activities in the community.
