MABEL F. AFFOLTER

Mabel F. Layng, daughter of Miles and Jane Layng was born in Mayo county, Ireland, Feb. 23, 1842. She spent her early girlhood in Ireland. At the age of 17 years, she came to Pittsburg, Penn. She took up dressmaking, worked at it until her marriage to Joseph Orr, Feb. 23, 1869. In 1870 they moved to Brooklyn, Ia., at which place she has resided most of her time since.

To this union were born seven children, four girls and three boys; Margaret A. Norris, Brookyn, Ia.; Jennie E. Norris, Brooklyn, Ia.; Lillie M. Hall, Guernsey, Ia.; Daisy K. Patten, Brooklyn, Ia., John L. Orr, Toppenish, Wash.; Thomas R. Orr, deceased in 1919; Henry W. Orr, Newcastle, Wyoming.

Her husband died in 1880 leaving her with this family of small children. She continued on the farm, making a living until 1886 when she was united in marriage to Fred Affolter. To this union were born two children: Elizabeth L. McFarland, Cottage Grove, Ore. and Charles A. Affolter, who died with the flu in 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Affolter moved to South Brooklyn where she lived until the time of her death, Mr. Affolter preceding her death 12 years ago.

She united with the Episcopalian church in Ireland when a small child and continued in this faith which she kept to the end of her days.

She numbered her friends by her acquaintences and to know her was to love her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, five daughters, two sons, 27 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren besides numerous other relatives and friends.

NOTE: The birth year of 1842 is incorrect. The tombstone is dated 1846 which is also incorrect.
