MRS. ANN JENNETTE HOUGHTON

Ann Jennette Poppleton was born at Dunbarton, New York, Nov. 17, 1835. She was married in 1853 to Nelson Akey; to this union was born one daughter, now Mrs. I.S. Bailey, Jr. After the death of her husband she was married to William Houghton in 1859. To them were born one daughter now Mrs. A.A. Foster, and one son, John Houghton, of Edmore, North Dakota. She also gave a mother's love to an adopted daughter, now Mrs. Ray Lockhart. She united with the Methodist church at the age of twenty years. In the early seventies she transferred her membership to the Methodist church of Grinnell. She was a member of the Dorcas Society which was composed of her neighbors and which was represented at the funeral services. She was very active in social life until her health failed her. She liked the company of young people and did all she could to make it pleasant for them. She was very generous and much preferred to give rather than to receive.

The family moved to Iowa in 1866, settling in Clinton county and from there moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where they lived one year, moving to Grinnell on a farm east of town in 1870. From there they moved on to their farm northwest of Grinnell in 1873 and she continued to live there until about one year ago when, her health failing, she was brought to town to live with her daughter, Mrs. I.S. Bailey, who has taken care of her since that time.

Her husband and entire family were all able to be present at the funeral services.

The following letter is one of many received from old neighbors and friends of Mrs. Houghton:

Colorado Springs, Colo.
Dear Mrs. Bailey and All:

Clara's letter yesterday said, that your mother had gone.

I hasten to send my sympathy and sorrow at your loss. I feel as though it was my own as well as yours because I thought so much of her. She was a dear, good, Christian woman, and we will miss her sadly, but I am sure that our loss is her gain, no more suffering and pain for her--but rest and peace with Jesus whom she loved.

MR. AND MRS. G.T. BAGGS.
