CHARLES UHL SR., 85

Charles Uhl, Sr., "Chuck" to all his friends in Brooklyn, where he was born to Forrest and Nellie Uhl, May 5, 1920, passed away February 14, 2006. He was a 1939 graduate of Brooklyn High School. He was married to Dona Rae Sims in 1940. Dona Rae passed away after 60 years of marriage. Their two children, Connie Lingle and Charles Jr. survive him.

They lived in Detroit and Indianapolis. Charles was a member of the Teamsters Union for over 30 years, driving for Roadway Express until his retirement in 1981. The couple then moved to Santee, California where he was known as "Charlie." Charlie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Asssociation, and the new frontier shuffleboard team for many years. For the last 12 years he participated at the Del Mar fair where he demonstrated chair caning. He was always smiling as he drove friends to the blind center, for doctors appointments, to the drug store and grocery store, or to lunch at the senior center in Santee.

A World War II, 4th Armored, 21st AIB Army veteran he was presented with two Bronze Stars. He was among the first 10 soldiers to liberate the Jewish Concentration camp at Mauthausen with Patton's 4th Armored. He also stood Honor Guard at Gen. Patton's funeral.

Interment was with his wife at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on March 13, 2006 with full military honors. A celebration of life was held afterward at the senior park where he lived.

Surviving besides his children, are grandchildren, Lisa Lingle Rosa, Adam Lingle and Ryan Uhl; and great-grandchildren, Christina Rosa and Cali Lingle. Local relatives are aunt Mildred Beem, Friendship Manor, Grinnell; first cousins, Valda Connell and Dorothy Lang of Brooklyn, and Lucille Smith, Phoenix, Ariz.
