Montezuma Weekly Republican; Aug. 5, 1903

Leona Ethel Benton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Benton, was born in Brooklyn, Ia., July 14, 1886, and died in Montezuma, Ia., July 28, 1903, aged 17 years and 14 days. She had been in poor health for some time but had not been unable to go around until about one week. She united with the M.E. church in Montezuma about five years ago and was an interested attendant and member of the Epworth League when not hindered by living on the farm or poor health. She was an industrious, good girl, and third from the oldest of five brothers and three sisters. She will be missed, but she had said within a few days before the end: "I am not afraid to die."

Her funeral was held from the home on Thursday afternoon, Rev. Clarke conducting the service and using the text for the occasion "I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, right blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit." "They rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Our faithful and Christian loved ones are happy and safe, and though we miss them we may meet them again in the other home.
