From the Grinnell Herald, April 8,1884:
Benson - In Grinnell, Saturday, April 5, 1884, Washington Benson, aged 62 years, 7 months, 5 days.

Deceased was born in Bradford county, Pa., July 30, 1821. He came to Iowa in 1857 and has lived in Grinnell the past nine years. He has been the suject of affliction for twenty-two years past in various forms, but working as best he could most of the time uncomplainingly. He was taken with the serious illness which terminated in his death a little more than a week ago. He was perfectly rational till the last, and just before the parting moment gave his family his parting blessing, full of faith, in hope of a glorious resurrection and immortality, where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest. He united with the M.E. church in early life, and continued a consistant member of the same until released by death. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church on Sabbath afternoon at half past three o'clock, conducted by Rev. Jno. Haynes, and the remains were consigned to their final resting place in the cemetery at 4:30. A widow and six children mourn his loss. They have the heartfelt sympathy of the community of which the departed was a respected member.--Independent.
