Obituary: Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel W. and Sarah DILLSAVER HUBBARD, was born in Marion County, Indiana, November 5, 1866, and died at her home in Montezuma, being nearly 79 years of age. She came to Iowa in her early years and was married in 1885 to Jesse THORN. They lived on a farm east of Montezuma until 1896 when the husband passed away. Two children came to bless this home, John H., who died in 1935, and Edna L. GOODALE, who passed away in 1918. Not long after her husband's death, Mrs. THORN moved to Montezuma where she lived until her children had finished their education in the local high school. After the daughter's marriage to Harry A. GOODALE, they, with Mrs. THORN and son returned to the farm and lived there a number of years. Mrs. GOODALE was stricken in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and left a family of five small children. In the years that have followed, Mrs. THORN has been a mother as well as grandmother to these children. They have cared for her in her declining years. Mrs. THORN has felt the effect of three wars: Her father was a soldier in the Civil War and died at an early age as the result of that service. Her son, a veteran of World War I sucumbed to an illness which undoubtedly had its beginning in that conflict. Her grandsons are taking part in World War II. SGT Edward J. GOODALE in the China-Burma-India theater of war, and PFC Glenn THORN at present in North Carolina, having recently returned from the European theater. Mrs. THORN not only cared for her loved ones during sickness, but ministered to many friends and neighbors whenever help was needed. She was indeed a friend to many. Mrs THORN was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the G.A.R. Circle. Surviving are two brothers, Wm. and A. W. HUBBARD, and a sister, Mrs. Cora HARTSMAN; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Anna THORN, her son-in-law, Harry A. GOODALE; five grandchildren: SGT Edward J. GOODALE, Arnold GOODALE of Cedar Rapids, Jean GOODALE of Montezuma, Mrs. Alice MESSICK of Newton, and PFC Glenn THORN. Also three great-grandchildren, Arthur Craig, Michael Dean GOODALE, and Kenton Cleveland MESSICK.
