Caroline Houck Appleby

Funeral services were held on July 5 at ten o'clock at the Halvorson funeral home at Dows for Mrs. Caroline Houck Appleby. Mrs. Appleby's death occurred Tuesday morning in her home in Dows. The Rev. R. A. Brough was in charge of the services.
Bernice Hersman and Mrs. Carol DeNio accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy McAdams sang "In the Garden" and "Face to Face." Interment was in the Kent cemetery north of Brooklyn with the following serving as pallbearers: Richard Bessman, Herman Kreitlow, Earl Carter, Archie Foust, Earl Cundall and Harry Studley.
Caroline C. Hanson, daughter of Fred and Karen Hanson, was born Feb. 5, 1870 at Blairstown, Iowa. On December 6, 1890 she was united in marriage to Jacob Houck. They made their home on a farm in Poweshiek county until 1909 when they moved to Wright county. Mr. Houck died in August of the same year.
On Feb. 18, 1914 she married Eli Appleby. They farmed in Wright and Franklin county until they retire from the country. Mr. Appleby died July 15, 1940 and Mrs. Appleby has made her home in Dows since that time.
Mrs. Appleby had five children by her first marriage, four of whom survive: Walter R. Houck of Galt, Mrs. Oscar Hagen and Mrs. Maud Hiatt of Clarion and Nelson, S. Houck of Richland Center, Wisc. The oldest son, Fremon died March 28, 1950. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, three brothers, Andrew Hanson of Brooklyn, Chris Hanson of Browning, Mo., Fred Hanson of Laclede, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Cora Kraft of Dows and Mrs. George Simms of Fort Worth, Texas. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.
