Died at his home near Carnsforth Wednesday April 29, 1896, of abscess of the lungs, Samuel B. Wheeler, aged 57 years, 8 months, and 26 days. Deceased was born in Maryland, August 3, 1838. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary J. Ports, March 22, 1860. By this union 14 children were born, all of whom survive him except one, and with the widowed mother mourn the loss of one who was always kind and affectionate in life – a true husband and father. Mr. Wheeler was converted to Christ at the age of fifteen and during the years that have followed he has lived a consistent Christian life, being a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the time of his death. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, and friend, and was respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held at his late residence Saturday afternoon at 1:00 conducted by Rev. Montgomery, of Victor. The text for the sermon was selected by Mr. Wheeler himself and was taken from the words of Paul: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown which the righteous judge giveth and not to me only but to all those that love his appearing.” Rev. Montgomery’s remarks were practical, pointed and sympathetic. The large attendance at the funeral was fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased. The remains were tenderly laid away in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. The children from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard, Livingston, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Wheeler, Belle Plaine; Mr. A. T. Wheeler, Bromfield, Nebraska; Mr. David Wheeler, Muchakinock; Mrs. E. H. Coatney, Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. N. Wheeler, Tioga; Mrs. Ola Jennings, Montpelier, Idaho; Mr. T. G. Wheeler, Des Moines.
