FIRST POLIO PATIENT OF 1953

Poweshiek county's first polio patient of 1953, Gladys VeVerka, 11-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan VeVerka of RFD, Montezuma, was taken to University hospital at Iowa City Monday evening for diagnosis and treatment.

The girl became sick Monday with a fever, headache and some stiffness. She was taken to a Grinnell hospital, then moved to Iowa City where Mrs. VeVerka said her condition was "some better" Wednesday, though there was some stiffness of the back.

Seriousness of the attack will not be known until it has run its course.
