Aug. 13, 1953AUSTIN DEAD
IN PW CAMPMr. and Mrs. C.W. Austin of R.R. 3, Grinnell, received a telegram this morning, (Thursday) from the war department reporting that their son, Wayne Austin, had been reported dead in a prison camp in North Korea.
Evidently the delayed news of his death was brought about by the process of prisoner exchange in Korea at this time, as the only other message the Austins have had about their son was two and one-half years ago when they were advised that Wayne was "missing in action." That telegram stated that he had disappeared from his outfit Feb. 12, 1951.
At the time of his disappearance Wayne Austin was nearly 26 years of age.
No word of any kind was heard from him while he was a captive, or prisoner.
