The Grinnell (IA) Herald; (1893)

Republican:--Rev. S.C. Smith was pastor of the M.E. church at Searsboro and Forest Home several years ago. At the latter place he drank some lye, thinking it medicine, and his life was despaired of for a time. His throat has never fully recovered from the effects of the poison. Later his wife was taken down with the rheumatism and for years has been an invalid. Last fall, after years of successful preaching, he took a superannuated relation to the church and settled at Mt. Pleasant. But misfortunes follow him. A few weeks ago his son Lewis, a bright young man, died. Now his daughter Gertie is dangerously ill, and Mr. Smith himself, worn out with care and anxiety, is confined to his bed. This, with the condition of his wife, makes his lot a sad one indeed.
