The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Nov. 30, 1915

THIRTY-EIGHT GRINNELL MEN WERE IN COMPANY E, FOURTH IOWA CAVALRY

D.F. Hayes was remembering the other day and his remembrances took him back to the Civil war, when Company E of the Fourth Iowa cavalry was raised in Grinnell. When the company finally went to war it included 80 men form Poweshiek county of whom 38 were from the then tiny town of Grinnell. Ten were from Jasper county. A.B. Partell was captain and Oscar Perkins was first lieutenant. Both of them were Grinnell men. Later, of course, there were other officers. Of all the Grinnell men who went away to war in this historic regiment, just three are left: D.F. Hayes, Henry Black and C.G. Penfield.
