A HAPPY CELEBRATION

Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Buchanan Observe Their Golden Wedding Anniversary

THEIR CHILDREN GATHER FOR HAPPY OCCASION

Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan Were Married In Muscatine in 1870--Came to Grinnell 25 Years Ago

A golden wedding of great interest not only to Grinnellians but to many residents of the county was that of Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Buchanan, celebrated Saturday, November 13. Only twelve immediate relatives were present, Mrs. Buchanan's health not permitting an open house as had been previously planned. All the children, except Mrs. A.R. Thompson of San Diego, Calif., were home for the day. Dinner was served at the Country club and many beautiful floral gifts were received among which was a fagot basket containing fifty golden sunburst roses, from the grandchildren. Both Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan are Iowa pioneers, Mr. Buchanan coming to Iowa in 1855 when he was eight years of age and Mrs. Buchanan coming in 1852 at the age of four. They were married at Muscatine Nov. 13, 1870 and they immediately settled on an Iowa county farm. Later they moved to Victor where they resided until 1895. Their four children, Mrs. A.R. Thompson of San Diego, Calif., Fannie R. Buchanan of Minneapolis, C.M. Buchanan of Mitchell, S.D., and Mrs. R.E. Bates, of Grinnell were born at Victor. Miss Frances Cross of Minneapolis was adopted by them while they lived there.

Twenty-five years ago they came to Grinnell where Mr. Buchanan became a member of the real estate and insurance firm of Buchanan and Smith. He retired from this business several years ago.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan have always been active members of the Methodist church, and until recently have conducted Bible classes in the Sunday school. They have also been leaders and interested workers in the community betterment movement and have always been ready to respond to any call from the poor and needy.

A large circle of warm Grinnell friends congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan on their happy fifty years together and hope the coming years may be as full of joy as those which have passed. In their lives they have been models for their children and their home has been a wellspring of joy to all who have met there.

Mr. Buchanan is a veteran of the Civil War and did his full part in preserving the Union.

Miss Fannie Buchanan is now located at Minneapolis and is Field representative for the Red Cross. Miss Frances Cross is also in Minneapolis as the Metropolitan secretary of the Y.W.C.A.

Mrs. J.W. Gortner, of Victor, Mr. Buchanan's only sister was present at the reunion.
