NUTTING-BURCH REUNION ATTENDED BY MANY RELATIVES

The twelfth annual Nutting-Burch reunion, which is always a large and prominent summer affair, took place at Merrill park Sunday, June 26, with sixty-seven relatives present to enjoy the delightful "get-together." Records revealed that William Neville was the oldest present and Kay Gould of Albion, the youngest, she also maintaining this title last year. B.L. Nutting of Spencer came from the most distant point.

During the afternoon business session, the following officers were re-elected to preside for the ensuing year: President, Ada Andrews of Davenport; vice president, Clara Holland of Davenport; secretary, Thelma Baustian of Malcom; assistant secretary, Florence Nutting of Pella; treasurer, Harley Burch of Brooklyn; assistant treasurer, Mrs. Charles Huff of Grinnell.

A short period of silence paid tribute to three relatives who passed away during the past year. A letter of greeting was read from the Raymond Nutting family of Milo, who are relatives of the late Rev. John K. Nutting, founder and builder of the "Little Brown Church in the Vale." Rev. Mr. Nutting experienced no end of difficulties in establishing the now famous church. Depression times prevailed in 1857 and the struggling minister's yearly salary was only $500. In 1859 he received but $400 in cash and the rest in food or fuel. A bushel of apples or a bag of beans were most acceptable as a wedding fee. The church was finally completed in 1864.

Next year the reunion will be held in the same place, the last Sunday in June.

The following attended:

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Andrews, and Mr. Ellsworth Burch, of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Nutting of Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. George Bailey and Miss Mildred Huff of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Amory Burch, Mr. and Mrs. William Neville, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Baustian and Thelma, Mr. and Mrs. Cooper Hutchison, Gladys and Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Neville, William, Wayne and Darrell, of Malcom; Mrs. John Fuerst of Ewart.
