Carpenter, Daniel Hendricks- Parents?

I'm looking for a family connection for Daniel Hendricks Carpenter, b. about 1870 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was out in California before 1910, in Richmond (Contra Costa Co.), married to a g-aunt of mine named Lillian McGregor. Anna Thorne was living with them and identified as the mother of the head of household. I have 1910-1930 censuses, and his obit in 1955. His obit says he'd been in Richmond for 50 years; no parents names given, no death cert. available to me. Censuses indicated his parents born in PA or NY (slightly contradictory info). Anyone recognize this family?
