1885 death records

Why are there no records of deaths in 1885? I have learned diptheria (phonetic spelling) was prevalent that year, and many, many, many people died. They died, they were buried right away, and no record of their deaths was made. Why? I recently searched the books at the Pottawattamie County Recorder's Office. Absolutely NO ONE is listed as dying in 1885 in the printout book that I researched. The records at Walnut Hill are also scant for 1885. In Reel's Cemetery, a headstone for my great, great grandmother Christina Rief lists she and 4 of her children died in 1885. I've searched the Nonpareil microfilm and that of a then-Crescent newspaper for Christina's obit. I can't find it. Somewhere, someone MUST have made a record of the deaths in 1885. Does anyone know? Thank you.
