Obituary of John Sievers
John Sievers was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, January 9, 1851 and passes away at his late home in Avoca, Iowa, Sunday morning, June 1, 1919 at an age of 68 years, 4 months and 22 days. In his infancy he was baptized in the name of Christ, thus becoming a member of the Lutheran church. At the age of six years, Mr. Seivers came to America with this parents, locating first at Davenport, Iowa, and later the family moved to Johnson County, Iowa. Mr. Sievers came to Pottawattamie County in 1875. He was united in marriage to Miss Ella Windgrove at West Liberty, Iowa in July 1876. This union was blessed with three children, Harry D., Ida M. and Walter C. On July 3, 1888 Mrs. Sievers passes away. The following year he moved to Avoca. August 5, 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Ruckle. Besides his grief stricken wife and three children, Harry, Ida and Walter, he leaves eleven grandchildren, five brothers, Henry of Everett, Washington, Claus and Fred of Walnut, Julius of Humboldt, Kansas, William of Portland, Oregon, and one sister, Mrs. William Thies of Avoca, to mourn his loss. A host of other relatives and friends will miss him. Mr. Sievers joined the Masonic lodge in 1906 and was one of the prominent members of the Blue lodge serving as High-Priest of the Chapter for a period of five years. He was also a member of the Councils at Harlan, Iowa. He was a devoted husband and fond father, a good neighbor and a true friend, an honest upright man and a true faithful citizen. The funeral services were held at the late home on Tuesday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Bliese reading the services and preaching the sermon. The Masonic lodge then took charge of the remains and with the burial services of that order he was laid to rest in the Avoca cemetery.
