LORENZO CHASE DEAD
Lorenzo D. Chase, son of Wheaton and Eliza Ann Chase, was born in Johnson County, Iowa, June 29, 1841; departed this life at the home of his sister, Angelina Coleman, Oakland, Iowa, July 11, 1904, aged 63 years, and 12 days. He was the third child in a family of eleven children. He was united in marriage to Anna E. Lemon at Toledo, Ia., June 21, 1865. To this union was born three children, one girl and two boys: Mrs. Lulu Chase Maxwell, of Avoca, Ia.; Arthur W. Chase, of the United States Army, located in Philippine Islands; Seth Chase, of the U.S. Navy, located at Boston, Mass. His first sickness dates back almost twelve years, when he was stricken with paralysis from which he never wholly recovered. Something near a year ago he was taken with typhoid pneumonia while located at Florence, Colo., where he was engaged in gold mining. The latter part of last Oct., he was stricken the second time with paralysis, from which he never recovered. This shock left him nearly blind and quite feeble. On June 7, he arrived at Oakland and made his home with his brother-in-law, A. Coleman, until death. Everything was done for him that loving hearts and kind hand could do, but death the black winged enemy of mankind, had laid its cold icy hand upon him. Brother Chase had made his calling and election sure. That treasure in earthen vessels, which is of so much value in the eyes of our God, was indeed found in our departed brother, a contrite spirit and a broken heart. “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Ps. 34:17. His great desire was to get home and become obedient to the commands of the gospel of Christ. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Rev. 14:13. The funeral occurred Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Mr. Coleman’s residence, Rev. Green having charge. The remains were taken to Avoca for interment.
