Virgil Butler dies at 82

Virgil Butler, 82, 706 W. Taylor, died Sunday afternoon at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Graveside rites will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Congregational Cemetery at Treynor. Friends may call as they desire at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church at Fairfield and the American Lung Association.

Butler funeral set (missing)

Virgil Butler, 82, 706 W. Taylor St., died Sunday at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Butler was born Dec. 23, 1904, in Oakland, Iowa, to William Kinsman and Lura Hackett Butler. He grew up in the Oakland community where he attended grade school, graduated from Atlantic High School and received his engineering degree in 1928 from Iowa State College in Ames.

He was district engineer in southwest Iowa prior to moving to Fairfield in 1960, where he served as district engineer for the Iowa State Highway Commission District 5 until his retirement in December 1974.

He married Anna Varner on Mar. 28, 1958, at Phoenix, Ariz. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield and the Masonic Lodge at Oakland for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Anne, and her husband, James Cook, of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Graveside rites and burial will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Cemetery at Treynor.

Friends may call at their convenience at the funeral home beginning Tuesday noon.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the American Lung Association.
