Eugene J. "Gene" Denning

Eugene J. "Gene" Denning, age 91, of Neola, Iowa, passed away January 3, 2015, at CHI Community Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Gene was born May 1, 1923, in Neola, Iowa, to the late William H. and Loretta (Cavanaugh) Denning. He graduated from Shelby, Iowa High School with the class of 1941 an proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Randolph from 1945-1946. Gene married Carolyn M. Schiltz on November 25, 1948. They were blessed with son, Donald. Gene was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Neola and the Neola American Legion Post #330.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tricia and brother, Michael Denning.

Gene is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn M. Denning; son, Don Denning, both of Neola; grandchildren, Kimberlee, Kerrie and Jason; brother, Bernard (Martha) Denning, of Neola; sisters, Mary Corrine Sweeney, of Evergreen, Colo., Joann Corrin, of Neola, Leona McCarthy, of Omaha, Neb., Pauline Fischer, of Neola, Angela McDonald, of Littleton, Colo., Kathleen (Mike) Dermody, of Jennings, Mo.; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family, Tuesday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a Wake Service at 6 p.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Neola. Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Mike Berner as the celebrant.

Interment St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Neola with military honors tendered by American Legion Post #330.

A lunch will follow in the parish hall. Memorials are suggested to St. Albert Schools or the Micah House.
