Obituary:
Esther Irene Nelson, age 92, of Neola, Iowa, passed away at her home on January 31, 2014.

Esther was born October 23, 1921, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to the late John and Dagma (Thompson) Olsen. She graduated from Beebeetown High School in 1939 and from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1943. Esther was a school teacher for 35 years, teaching 1st and 2nd grades in country school, Underwood, Iowa and Tri-Center Schools. She retired in 1989. Esther was a life-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Neola, a member of Ruth Circle and long-time Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard R. Nelson in 1959; grandson, Kevin B. Nelson; 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Esther is survived by her significant other, Michael “Mick” Ring of Neola; son, Dennis Nelson and girlfriend Kathy Carlson of Ute, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; sister, Bernice (Lowell) Hooge of Council Bluffs; brothers, Eugene (Betty) Olsen of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Kenneth (Marilyn) Olsen of Tulsa, Okla.; many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Visitation with the family, Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel.

Funeral service, Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Neola, Iowa. Pastor Norm Jelken will officiate.

Interment St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, with a lunch following at the parish hall.
