Frances Ora (Quirk) Nielsen, age 88, of Minden, Iowa, passed away July 27, 2011, at Midlands Living Center in Council Bluffs.

Frances was born August 29, 1922, in Big Springs, Neb., to the late Charles and Loreta (McClellan) Quirk. She attended school in Big Springs until her family moved to a farm north of Minden, Iowa in 1939, graduating with the Minden, Iowa class of 1940. In the early 1940's, Frances worked as a waitress at Brandeis in Omaha and for a time at a war plant in Council Bluffs called Howards Mfg. Frances married Wilbur Nielsen in 1943 and became a mother and homemaker. Together they raised four children. Frances loved taking care of flowers, cooking and baking, especially pies and home-made cinnamon rolls and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 58 years, Wilbur Nielsen in 2001; infant daughter; sister, Phyllis Ring; and brother, Eugene Quirk.

Frances is survived by son, Randy Nielsen, of Bellevue, Neb.; daughters, Jane Mitchell, of Council Bluffs, Denise Wagner, of Bellevue, Sharon (AJ) Betancourt, of Omaha; five grandchildren, Jason Lundergard, Tony Nielsen, Heather Gravert, Jonathan Betancourt, Tracey Thraen; 8 great grandchildren, Amy Rasmussen, Rachel Rasmussen, Mackenzie Nielsen, Hailey Gravert, Jeremiah Gravert, Noah Betancourt, Justin and Brody Lundergard; one great-great grandson, Ethan Alexander Lopez; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Visitation with the family, Sunday, 3 to 5 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral service, Monday, 1 p.m., at the mortuary with Rev. Jonathan Betancourt, grandson, officiating.

Interment Minden Cemetery with a luncheon following at Frances' house in Minden.

The family will direct memorials.
