Memorial service for Randy D. Kernes, 45, of Council Bluffs was held today at 11 a.m. at Dodge Memorial Congregational Church with the Rev. Jeff Kraft officiating.

Mr. Kernes died May 24 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

He was born Sept. 16, 1957, in Council Bluffs to Don and Kay (Hough) Kernes. He attended Avenue B grade school, Woodrow Wilson Junior High and graduated in 1976 from Thomas Jefferson High School. He was a security guard for Jennie Edmundson Hospital for the past three years. Prior to that, he worked for Richard Young and Methodist Hospitals. He was a member of Dodge Memorial Congregational Church where he was a trustee and in the Diaconate program; Troop No. 11 Boy Scouts of America, where he held all of the offices; and Mad Dads.

Mr. Kernes and his wife, Annette (Hartlieb), were married two years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amanda Kernes, on Feb. 5, 2002, and his mother, Kay Kernes, on Feb. 13, 2000.

Survivors in addition to his wife include daughter, Heather Kernes; father, Don Kernes and wife, Ann; sister, Kim Gulizia and husband, Joe; brother, David Kernes and wife, Toni, all of Council Bluffs; sister-in-laws, Cecilia Carlson and Diane Lunsford, both of Sioux City; nieces and nephews.

The body has been cremated. Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be offered to Troop No. 11 Boy Scouts of America or to the family.
