Alvin D. Larsen, 81, of Lemon Grove, Calif., died May 3 at home after an extended illness.

He was born March 20, 1922, to Chris and Mary Larsen in Honey Creek. Alvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served with a Cee Bee Construction Battalion as a medic in several areas of the South Pacific in World War II and various ships during the Korean War. He retired in 1964 after 24 years of service. After the service he earned a degree in English and was an English instructor with the California Education System until 1984.

He and his wife, Naida, were married 57 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Sharon Western and husband, John, of Carlsbad, Calif., Mary Krueger and husband, Richard, of Jamul, Calif.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Tighe of Glenwood and Beulah Petersen and husband, John, of Fremont, Neb.; two brothers, Orville and wife, Phyllis, and Doyle, all of Council Bluffs.

The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date with interment of ashes at Rose Crans National Cemetery at Point Loma, Calif.
