George H. Eckmann

NEOLA - Mr. George H. (Herb) Eckmann, 74, formerly of Persia, died March 21 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

He was born in Persia, March 4, 1929, to George and Alma. C. (Meier) Eckmann.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a farmer, and retired in 1990.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Neola.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann (Loney) Eckmann in 1987.

He is survived by a daughter, Teresa Higginbotham and husband Mark of Neola; three sons, Dennis Eckmann and wife Cathy of Neola, Russell Eckmann and wife Penny of Beale AFB, Calif., and John Eckmann and wife Della of New Castle, Okla.; three sisters, Lavina Glotfelty of Davenport, Dorothy Eckmann of Persia, and Martha Eckmann of Omaha; two brothers, Melvin Eckmann, and Earl Eckmann and wife Marian, all of Persia; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Richard Gubbels officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery with full military rites performed by Neola American Legion Post 330.

A wake will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the church, followed by visitation.

A luncheon will follow committal service at St. Patrick's Social Hall.

Memorials may be offered to the Neola Fire and Rescue Department and St. Patrick's Church.

Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
