In Memory: Harry C. Bledsoe

Harry Charles Bledsoe, 78, of Avoca died August 26, 2000 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

Harry was born on September 13, 1921 on Long Island, New York, one of five children in the family of Harry and Cecilia Mullen Bledsoe. He attended school in Brooklyn, New York.

He served in the Merchant Marines until joining the U.S. Army for service during World War II. Harry met Velma Craig in Washington, D.C. after being discharged from the Army. They were married on July 23, 1945 in Avoca, Iowa.

Harry then started his own plumbing business, which he operated in the Avoca and Shelby areas. Velma died on April 27, 1974.

Harry married Charlotte Noller Troll on September 27, 1976. He continued with his plumbing business until his retirement in 1983.

Harry was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the VFW and the American Legion and was a Boy Scout Leader for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George, his sister Marjorie and his first wife, Velma.

Survivors include his wife Charlotte of Avoca; his daughter Marcia, her husband David Lund and their children Andy and Daniel, all of Des Moines; a step-daughter, Becky and her husband Ron Parsons of Avoca and their son, Chad Parsons of Las Vegas, New Mexico; two sisters, Dorothy and her husband Nick Barber of Bridgewater, New Jersey and Gerry and her husband Ray Slattery of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral ceremonies were held at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Lay Assistant Wayne Paulsen of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was in the Walnut Cemetery at Walnut, Iowa.
