In Memory: Mary Jane Kerns

Funeral for Mary Jane Kerns, 72, of Walnut was held Tuesday at 2 P.M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Treynor with the Rev. Glenn Schacht officiating.

Mrs. Kerns died October 27 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.

She graduated from Treynor High School in 1945, attended Augustana College and had lived in Council Bluffs. She was a self-employed antique dealer, was a former music teacher at Carson High School and gave private music lessons in Treynor. She served as director of the Pottawattamie County Red Cross in 1978 before she was transferred to the Heartland Red Cross chapter in Omaha.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Treynor and had served as church choir director and directed the Treynor Top Twenty musical group.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, D. Merle Hayes, 1977. She and her second husband, Earl E. Kerns Sr., were marred March 16, 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Julie Spring of Omaha and Marilyn Levison and husband, Everett, of Omaha; two sons, Chuck Hayes Kansas City, Missouri, and Todd Hayes of Omaha; five stepdaughters, Jenny Brooks and husband, Doug, of Greenville, Tennessee, Susan Greer and husband, Clifford, of Walnut, Bonnie Kerns of Omaha, Mary Miller of Louisiana and Lisa Kerns of Denver; a stepson, Ed Kerns, and wife, Linda, of Council Bluffs; 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family was held at Cutler Funeral Home. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery at Treynor.

Memorials may be offered to the American Cancer Society.
