In Memory: Barney W. Johnson

The funeral for Barney W. Johnson, 81, of Schuyler, Nebraska, was held Saturday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Schuyler with Father John Buckson officiating.

Mr. Johnson died December 3 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. He was born October 4, 1920, in North Bend, Nebraska, to William and Magdalena (Becker) Johnson.

He graduated in 1939 from Schuyler High School. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1942 to October 1945 and fought in the European Theater. He was on the first wave of the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He received several battle clusters, campaign medals, and the Purple Heart while serving overseas for 44 months.

He was a basketball and football official for over 35 years and coached the Schuyler Midget and Legion baseball teams for several years in the late 50s and early 60s. He served for many years on the Schuyler Golf Club Board of Directors.

He was employed at Wagner Mills until he retired. He was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and Schuyler Golf Club, all in Schuyler.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Susan (Abbate), on December 21,1997.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Barney and wife, Brenda, of Minden and Jeff and wife, Kathy, of Columbus; one sister, Almira Byer, and husband, Jim, of Columbia, PA; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

A combined Knights of Columbus and Parish rosary was held on Friday followed by family visitation at Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel in Schuyler. Burial was in Schuyler Cemetery with military rites conducted by McLeod Post No. 57 of the American Legion and Hespen-Mitchell Post No. 4836 of the VFW both of Schuyler.
