In Memory: LaVerta Schoening

LaVerta June Jensen Schoening, 83, a resident of Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, died there on March 12, 2000.

She was born in Marne on June 15, 1916, one of two children in the family of William and Anna D. Skow Fischer. She attended school in Walnut and graduated from Walnut High School on May 23, 1935.

LaVerta married Elmer Jensen on March 16, 1938. They were the parents of three children: Richard, Carol and Roger.

LaVerta worked as the bookkeeper and was co-owner of Jensen Service in Minden. She and Elmer retired on January 1, 1979, after 40 years, when Elmer's health started to fail.

After Elmer's death in 1980, LaVerta became active as a volunteer at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. She married a fellow volunteer, Milton Schoening, on January 14, 1989. LaVerta continued volunteering at the hospital for 15 years.

Milton and LaVerta enjoyed traveling, as well as their volunteer work. They were active at the Council Bluffs Senior Center and participated in exercise class, card games and dancing.

In September of 1996 they moved to the Assisted Living apartments at Risen Son ChristianVillage due to their failing health. Milton died on February 2, 1998.

LaVerta was a former member of the Minden United Church of Christ, where she was active in the Women's Fellowship for many years. She was currently a member of the First Congregational Church in Council Bluffs and attended Christian Women's Club on a regular basis.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Doty and her husband Duwayne of Council Bluffs; two sons, Richard Jensen and his wife Judy of Minden and Roger Jensen of Iowa City; a brother Willard and his wife Frances of Springfield, Oregon; two stepdaughters, Ruth Elaine Schoening of Littleton, Colorado and Kathleen Ludwig of Buffalo, New York; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation with the family was held Thursday, March 16 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M.

Funeral service was held Friday a at 10 a.m. at the Minden United Church of Christ with the Rev. Will Reger of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Rev. David Borden of the Minden United Church of Christ officiating.

Burial was in the Minden Cemetery.

Knutson Funeral home in Avoca was in charge of arrangements.
